Child Advocacy Clinic

The Child Advocacy Clinic is an externship Clinic designed to educate students about a range of social change strategies and to encourage critical thinking about the pros and cons of different approaches. It addresses a variety of substantive areas impacting the lives of children, with a focus on child welfare (abuse and neglect, foster care, and adoption), education, and juvenile justice.

The Clinic has two components: a fieldwork placement and a classroom seminar.  For the fieldwork component, CAP places students with organizations and agencies engaged in a variety of work for children using various methods to effect change either around the Boston/Cambridge area or around the country.  You will conduct your fieldwork as a member of the host placement’s team, and will report directly to a supervising attorney who works for that organization.  Students then come together to use the seminar component (Lawyering for Children and Youth Clinical Seminar) to discuss their ongoing work and projects, reflect on each other’s varied experiences, and evaluate which strategies in the field are working and why.
