Parental-Rights Extremism And Its Anti-Democratic Foundation: A Talk with Carmen Longoria-Green

Join us for a lunchtime discussion with lawyer Carmen Longoria-Green, Wed., 3/30, at 12:30. This is the second event in the Child Advocacy Program's "Preserving Public Education" speaker series.

March 15, 2022 by Margo Strucker

Headshot CarmenLongoriaGreenAbout the event: According to lawyer Carmen Longoria-Green, recent violent outbreaks at school board meetings did not occur in a vacuum; they are the result of a decades-long campaign by parental-rights extremists, who assert that parents should have the power to deny children the knowledge they need to function as adults in a democratic society.  In her talk, “Parental-Rights Extremism And Its Anti-Democratic Foundation,” Longoria-Green will cover how parental-rights extremism was birthed in response to school desegregation and the perceived “godlessness” of public schools; its heavy hand in the homeschooling movement; its current political power; and what more we can expect from its adherents.

Carmen will be joining us remotely via Zoom, however the event and discussion will be in-person for the Harvard community.

Masking: There are members of our community who are particularly vulnerable to COVID. We do not want to put these members of our community at risk. Therefore, the CAP team will continue to wear masks at our events going forward, and we make a heartfelt request that you also continue to wear a mask.  We will have meals for you to take away with you after the talk.

Wednesday, March 30, 12:30 PM-1:30 PM, in WCC 3016
Grab & Go Indian food provided from Nirvana to take away with you after the talk

About the speaker: Carmen Longoria-Green is a lawyer, homeschool alumna, and board member of the Coalition for Responsible Home Education.  CRHE is the only organization in the country that advocates for the safety and wellbeing of homeschooled children.  It exists to counter the message of parental-rights extremism that currently dominates homeschooling circles by offering an alternative possibility for homeschooling, one where it exists solely as a child-centric method to lovingly prepare children for an open future.

Co-sponsored by: Advocates for Education, Child & Youth Advocates, La Alianza, American Constitution Society, Asian Pacific American Law Students Association, Women’s Law Association, Disability Law Students Association, and the Trauma and Learning Policy Initiative/Education Law Clinic

“Parental-Rights Extremism And Its Anti-Democratic Foundation,” is part of CAP’s Preserving Public Education speaker series. Click here to learn more about the series.
