About the event: According to lawyer Carmen Longoria-Green, recent violent outbreaks at school board meetings did not occur in a vacuum; they are the result of a decades-long campaign by parental-rights extremists, who assert that parents should have the power to deny children the knowledge they need to function as adults in a democratic society. In her talk, “Parental-Rights Extremism And Its Anti-Democratic Foundation,” Longoria-Green will cover how parental-rights extremism was birthed in response to school desegregation and the perceived “godlessness” of public schools; its heavy hand in the homeschooling movement; its current political power; and what more we can expect from its adherents.
Carmen will be joining us remotely via Zoom, however the event and discussion will be in-person for the Harvard community.

About the speaker: Carmen Longoria-Green is a lawyer, homeschool alumna, and board member of the Coalition for Responsible Home Education. CRHE is the only organization in the country that advocates for the safety and wellbeing of homeschooled children. It exists to counter the message of parental-rights extremism that currently dominates homeschooling circles by offering an alternative possibility for homeschooling, one where it exists solely as a child-centric method to lovingly prepare children for an open future.
